Offerings
Filipino is the national
language of the Philippines. The program offers two classes:
a Beginning Filipino class and an Intermediate Filipino class.
Headed by UP Sentro ng Wika (Language Center) Director Dr.
Leo Zafra, the faculty members of this program are professors
and graduates of the UP Department of Filipino and Philippine
Literature. The classes shall be introduced by a lecture on
"Filipino Language and the Struggle for National Identity"
by Professor Ramon Guillermo.
Both classes shall use the functional-situational
approach in learning a language. Classroom techniques include
games, songs, pair work, role plays and writing exercises.
Participants also attend laboratory classes with student assistants,
most of whom are Filipino and Philippine literature students
at the university. There shall be a maximum of 12 participants
in each language class. The students shall have 90 hours of
language study in the program.
At the end of the beginners' course,
students should be able to use Filipino in greetings, visiting
a friend's house, shopping, telling the time, making an appointment,
asking and giving directions, going to a medical clinic, and
expressing feelings. Those in the intermediate course learn
four necessary skills in the effective use of a language:
paglalahad (defining and explaining); paglalarawan (describing
a person, place, or feelings); pagsasalaysay (narrating a
story); and pangangatwiran (arguing).
