Program Courses

Two courses are offered:

Basic Course on Philippine Studies

Designed especially for Filipino-American students, the program hopes to develop the students' language skills, provide an overview of Philippine history and society, and contribute to discourses on identity, diaspora, and Philippine-American relations. The program has four components:

Philippine Studies Lecture Series
Beginning and Intermediate Filipino Language Classes
Workshops on Philippine Culture
Field Trips/Immersion Program

Directed Research Course

Scholars who would like to focus on research shall work with a professor assigned by the Dean of the UP College of Arts and Letters. Consultation meetings with the adviser are twice weekly. Assistance in library research, interviews, and field work shall be provided by a student research associate. Moreover, the visiting scholar shall have three consultation meetings with the foremost expert in his/her field. Attendance in lectures, workshops, and field trips is optional.

At the end of the course, the visiting student should have written either a research paper or finished a creative project.
