The University of the Philippines
Diliman was established in 1908 and its flagship campus in
Diliman, in 1949. The 493-acre campus has about seventy-four
(74) buildings housing the university's academic programs
and providing housing and recreational facilities for its
approximately 20,000 students and 2,500 faculty members. The
university offers 12 pre-baccalaureate, 74 baccalaureate and
8 post-baccalaureate programs.
The campus can be likened to a university
town: there are several libraries, two churches, a small shopping
mall (with grocery stores, bookstores, optical shops, snack
bars, internet stations, beauty salons, barber shops, drugstores
and gaming stations), a movie theater, several theaters for
plays, concerts and performances, an infirmary, a gymnasium,
tennis courts, swimming pools, and three full-service banks
on campus. The average meal costs 50 pesos or 1 dollar in
any of the 26 canteens on campus; fancier meals are available
at campus restaurants such as "Chocolate Kiss."
Students can also buy snacks at campus "kiosks"
or from any of the 69 "legitimate" vendors selling
fried bananas, fish balls, ice cream and lumpia. Students
usually take jeepneys to go around the campus.
